Adrienne Richis a wonderful poet. But why did she have to reject the National Medal for the Arts from Bill Clinton in 1997? Her objection seemed to be that he had cut Arts funding. Now I know governments often do fund the Arts, presumably as a way to buy votes. I guess they hope that the few who get the money will notice and be grateful, while the millions who pay a little extra tax won't. But she surely cannot believe that it is justified, on pain of imprisonment (because that is what happens if you don't pay your taxes), to take money from one person to give to another to write poetry, or paint, or sing. Or am I missing something? |
