I have no vested interest in smoking. I'm a non-smoker myself and am not employed by any tobacco company. Nor do I directly own any shares in such companies, although I guess I own some via my pension plans. However, smokers have a right to smoke so long as they do not harm the rest of us. The only possible harm that smokers do to the rest of us is inflicting the diseases of passive smoking. The "harms" of passive smoking are exaggerated. Most of the so called passive smokers who experienced high rates of smoking-related disease are either partners of smokers, or ex-smokers, or both. Partners can reasonably be assumed to have entered their partnerships voluntarily, and the tiny excess risks attributed to passive smoking cannot be clearly separated from the risks of having smoked yourself in the past. If this seems difficult to understand consider how dressing in a sensible tweed suit skirt and jacket if you are a woman, or a sensible anorak if you are a man decreases your chances of receiving a sexual offer. Being seen with a cigarette in your mouth sends the same signal as swapping that tweed skirt for some leather pants. |
