Canadian Global Warming Propaganda MinistryALBERTA - June 14, 2001 - The Government of Canada, the Government of Alberta and Albertans are working together to make it easier to find information about climate change. The Public Education and Outreach Centre, announced today, is an 18-month pilot project aimed at providing Albertans interested in responding to climate change with easy access to information and training programs. The Outreach Centre, or Public Education and Outreach Hub, is funded by the Government of Canada ($80,000), Alberta Environment ($60,000) and Climate Change Central ($20,000). It will bring together partners from government, business, environmental organizations and communities in Alberta to increase climate change awareness and encourage action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. "As a northern country, Canada is particularly susceptible to and is already seeing the signs of global warming, particularly in the Arctic. All Canadians can play a vital role in addressing climate change and this Hub will help Canadians increase their understanding of this important issue," said Environment Minister David Anderson. "When it comes to climate change, getting information into the hands of Canadians is key," said Ralph Goodale, Minister of Natural Resources Canada. "Hubs like this one will help Canadians understand the potential impacts of climate change and encourage them to begin taking action at home, at work and on the road."The Hub, managed by Climate Change Central, will act as an information clearinghouse to organizations that offer climate change education and outreach in Alberta. It will also serve as a catalyst for new programs and co-ordinate professional development for climate change educators. "Albertans tell us they want more information so they know how to act on the climate change issue," said Alberta Environment Minister Lorne Taylor. "This approach will pool the information and expertise needed for personal actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions." "Sharing information among stakeholders and bridging program gaps will help us all make more efficient use of funding resources," said Allan Amey, President and CEO of Climate Change Central. Climate Change Central is a unique partnership between Alberta businesses, governments and the environmental community, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Its multi-stakeholder programs focus on innovation, technology, education and public participation to strengthen Alberta's environmental energy advantage. This Hub is part of an 18-month program being piloted in a number of provinces and territories. Pilot Hubs are part of the First National Climate Change Business Plan, agreed to by the Joint Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers of Energy and Environment at their October 2000 meeting. This initiative is funded through the $150-million Climate Change Action Fund established by the Government of Canada in the 1998-99 federal budget and extended for a further three years in the 2000 federal budget. iGreen commentIf you’ve got this far I should explain. I left this press release unedited so you can count the clichés. It's been a long time since I read such a pile of feel-good government blibber-blabber. And to think it's only costing the Canadian dupes $150,000,000! You'd think Canada would welcome a little warmer climate. |
