Clare Short, Britain’s International Development Secretary, and ex Labour left winger has been defending free trade again in Doha.   Responding to criticism from European Greens and non governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Oxfam that the World Trade Organisation (WTO) trade round only benefits wealthy nations, she said;

“If you look at countries that were poor and have been most successful at [developing], they are countries that have opened up.”

“There is no closed economy that has successfully developed.  The argument that trade is bad for the poor is completely false.”

“Those who oppose the launch [of the new trade round] are acting against the interests of developing countries.”

Well done Clare!   You tell ‘em!
