A Sociology of Conservative Party Youth Structures and Libertarianism
1970-1992
by Timothy Evans (£8/$16 inc postage and packing)
Conservative radicalism: a sociology of conservative party youth structures and
libertarianism 1970-1992 describes and analyses one of the most important
phenomena in modern British politics - the rise within the youth wings of the
British Conservative Party of a new wave of libertarian activist.
Although the party's libertarians have been popularly associated by many opinion
formers with a reactionary agenda of social and economic change, this study
argues that their worldview has more to do with individualist - or 'property
rights' - anarchism, than any form of collectivist ideology such as fascism.
Defying traditional notions of left and right their core values rest upon a
radical agenda that is explicitly internationalist, individualist, socially
tolerant and secular.
In tracing the movement's history and beliefs, the book highlights the dramatic
impact of groups such as the Libertarian Alliance on a new generation of
political activist and points out that most libertarians
tend to oppose traditional forms of religiosity, nationalism, sexism and
militarism. Moreover, in severely questioning the monarchy, state marriage
contracts, tax funded police forces and all other forms of established
authority, libertarians are exposed for placing their faith in the authority of
reality, reason, man and capitalism.
As a school whose epistemology is reason, ethics - self interest, and politics -
anarcho-capitalism, libertarianism is exposed for representing an important new
paradigm in mainstream political discourse.
