Newcastle city council was fined £25,000 on 4 Jan 2002, for using 2000 tons of incinerator ash to make allotment footpaths. Judge Esmond Faulks said there were toxic chemicals in the ash, which should have been buried in a landfill. However, he also said there had been no health risks from using it on the paths. |
