Council pick up cyclist’s litter.
Kirklees Council in West Yorkshire opened an 11-mile cycle way between Cleckheaton and Heckmondwike last year, and have just started paying a council officer one day a week to cycle along and pick up litter on the route. Is this really a priority? Surely not for litter louts, or those who cycle past without collecting it, and certainly not for those who don't use the route. The Council's Environment and Transportation Management Board gets a press puff, and someone gets a council job, but it's a bit rich to claim that the policy "encourages everyone to share responsibility for maintaining [the cycle way's] condition". Does picking your children's clothes off the floor encourage them to share responsibility for keeping the house tidy?
