Phil Copeland writes:

What is all the fuss about?  Why can't the hunts turn to 'Drag hunting'.   That way everyone will be happy, nobody will lose their jobs or homes and both sides will be satisfied.  It seems to me that bloodlust is all that is driving the members of the hunts.

I have always lived in the country side.  However I cannot see the pleasure in ''Bloodsports' and would appreciate an explanation on 'Drag hunting'.

My reply

That's the central question isn't it.  I'm not a hunter either.  But I think I can understand that real hunting is very different from drag hunting.  There is a difference between a real life and death activity, and other sorts.

I was talking only last night at a  barn dance with a field master of our local bloodhound pack.  Bloodhounds follow the scent of a person and riders follow them on horseback.   She went fox hunting as well but couldn't explain the difference either.  Nevertheless she was very clear that while both sports are enjoyable and valuable, one is no way a replacement for the other.

I don't think blood lust was driving her, and I'm quite certain that people who appreciate and want to partake in foxhunting are not bad people.  I think we lose a lot as society if we stop them.

I can't really explain it.  The best I can do is say read some Hemingway.
