Jim,

I think on the issue of GM food you are possibly ignoring genuine concerns of people.

I don't consider myself an expert on the subject. But whether the fears about GM are unfounded or not, they are genuine.

I don't agree with the Green party's analysis that we should abandon GM and not even consider using it. But i think we need to take a step back conduct all the necessary trials and tests and then let the public make its own mind.

If GM is safe and no threat to other non GM crops in the area then lets use it.

Ian Richmond

iGreen reply

Dear Ian,

Many people are indeed concerned about GM food.  I bang on about it because their concerns are unfounded.

There are simply no health risks to humans from eating GM food.  The environmental risks are speculative, and insofar as GM increases yields and reduces the use of artificial pesticides there will be environmental benefits.

It’s no good saying let’s play safe and delay the introduction until more testing is done.  Complete safety can never be proved, and there are also considerable benefits to human health and welfare from cheaper food.   These are concentrated on the poor.   Delaying GM introduction harms real people now.

No-one objects to letting people make up their own minds.  They can decide for themselves whether to plant or eat GM, but only if their government has not first prohibited it.

Jim Thornton
