From 1764 to 1862 the cheapest road between the Derbyshire lead and coal mines and the Nottingham Navigation on the Trent was the private Ilkeston and Nottingham Turnpike.

The turnpike trust had been set up following a meeting of wealthy individuals at the "Blackamore's Head" Inn in Nottingham in 1763.

In 1825 all forms of transport including chariots, landaus, chaises, phaetons, gigs, hearses and caravans were charged 3d (2p).   As a result of the levies the road was maintained to a high standard.

The route went from Nottingham to Belper, then an important manufacturing town, passing through Wollaton, Trowell and Ilkeston.

In 1999 the original manuscript volumes of the Ilkeston and Nottingham Turnpike Trust dating from 1764 to 1862 were presented to Derbyshire county council by local historian Peter Smedley-Stevenson.  They are now kept in the Record Office in Matlock.
