Oil was discovered here in December 1985 and two wells were drilled.   Production started in March 1991.

Kirklington 2, owned by Pentex Oil and Gas Ltd., is still producing.

Leave the village of Kirlington on the main A 617 heading towards Newark.  The road bends left, rises over Kirklington hill, and at the top bends right.  Pass two private houses on the right and take an  unsurfaced track right about 1/4 miles after the top of the hill.  The unmarked turning is opposite a farm entrance.  The track rises straight up through a cornfield to the fenced oil field.

The estimated recoverable reserves of 10,000 tonnes of high quality oil are mainly used for plastics and in the chemical industry, rather than for fuel.   About 55 tonnes (400 barrels, 12,500 gallons) per year are taken by road tanker to a collecting station at Gainsborough and thence by rail to Immingham refinery.

More onshore oil wells here
