27 Feb 2003 update

This won the competition.  It wasn't iGreens favourite; it came third in our poll after Foster and the Peterson/Littenberg garden, boulevard and modest towers design.  Nevertheless it will be the world's tallest building, its height commemorating America's declaration of independence.   The upper floors will be uninhabited so no-one need live and work in a target.

The next competition, later this year, will be to design a memorial to place within the ground zero excavation.

Daniel Libeskind's tallest structure would be primarily symbolic.   A 1,776 foot tower of gardens in an open trusswork.  He would keep the excavation at ground zero open with a below ground memorial surrounding the footprints.   For each rescue company that responded on 9/11, a marker would be set in the pavement in direct line between ground zero and the rescuers home base.
