Hunting Bill - Support for Middle Way significantly strengthened by Lord Burns Author of the definitive ‘Burns Report’ endorses Middle Way Group proposals of licensing and new wild mammal law Lord Burns, the author of the Government’s definitive report into the consequences of a ban on hunting with dogs, has thrown his weight behind the licensing system advocated by the Middle Way Group. In a long and detailed debate last night, the licensing of hunting with dogs was given overwhelming support by the House of Lords. Peers from all parties, including Lord Burns, highlighted the glaring problems and inconsistencies in the Hunting Bill, showing that an outright ban would not improve animal welfare and would be totally unenforceable. During his speech, Lord Burns said, “there may still be a way forward, through a combination of licensed hunting and further reform of animal welfare legislation. I hope that it is not to late for a determined attempt to find a way forward on the issue that is evidence-based; gives the courts a clearer role; reflects the realities of farming; has a chance of commanding support on both sides of the debate; and, above all, will stand the test of time.” These comments echo exactly the Middle Way Group’s proposed licensed hunting combined with the Wild Mammals (Protection) (Amendment) Bill, which would protect all wild mammals from all undue suffering in all circumstances. Earlier in the year, this Bill was introduced by Lord Donoughue in the Lords and in the by Lembit Öpik MP in the Commons. Lord Donoughue, said, “I greatly welcome Lord Burns’ comments. He has produced a report which was regarded by all sides in the hunting debate as fair, authoritative and balanced. It has been quoted endlessly in debates by both sides of the argument. His views, therefore, must be regarded as absolutely crucial to the debate.” Lembit Öpik MP, co-chair of the Middle Way Group, said, “Lord Burn’s comments are a huge boost for the Middle Way Group and all those who believe that a ban on hunting with dogs will increase – rather than decrease – animal suffering.” |
