Update May 2006David Patterson who has lived in the area for over fifty years writes: "The
burn was probably at its worst when sewage, cokeworks, and collieries were
discharging into it. However things gradually improved and herons ,kingfishers,
and fish were observed. Since the winter of 2005 Lumley sixth pit has
discharged mine water at an unprecedented rate into the beck, as it is known
locally, turning the bed orange. I have contacted DEFRA, and the Residents
