Hello Jim.

I was interested to read about Meanwood Beck’s environmental problems. I had read about the oil spill when a friend sent me a cutting from the Yorkshire Post in 1999. I lived on Hustlers Row from 1936 until 1952 and I have very fond memories of Meanwood. I knew the area like the back of my hand. My mother bred Labradors and I used to take off for the day during the holidays and weekends (weather permitting!) with a couple of dogs.

I can remember roaming as far as Golden Acres Park, Paul’s dam, Adel dam and the Seven Arches.

Meanwood Quarry was a regular playground for the kids and the grounds of Colonel Kitson-Clarks estate were a popular spot nearer home, although we used to be chased out of there occasionally if we weren't on the watch for the ground staff! I can remember a beautiful lake with an island. Coots, moorhens and ducks abounded there and plenty of sticklebacks to fish for too. I seem to remember a monument to Captain Oates there too. The beck was an important part of our "playground" and I have explored its banks for miles.
