A note from Jim: I've indulgently posted this poem because Larkin wrote it while working in Wellington Library in Shropshire, a few miles from my second favourite canoeing river, the Severn. Click here for useful information.
I saw three ships go sailing by, A note from Larkin: "You understand 'journey' is pronounced naturally, to make a little hesitation in the rhythm, not in the godawful prizeday-recitation 'journee' manner. The last line of each verse is a formal refrain and should be in italics". Letter from Larkin to J B Sutton, 8 Oct 1944. Larkin was commenting on an earlier version of the poem. |
