Ollerton War Memorial

A lovely memorial park near Ollerton water mill contains two memorials.  A cross in memory of the 1914-18 and 1939-45 wars and, at the downstream end of the island between the millstream and the river, a smaller stone marking the 50th anniversary of the end of the 2nd World War.

The lovely Kohima Epitaph is inscribed on the latter.

When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today

It is strangley just slightly different from the inscription on the 2nd Division Memorial in Burma where the word Their is used instead of Your.  Click here to read more.

The only jarring note is a council sign, written entirely in capitals, presumably by someone who normally uses green ink!  It prohibits use of the park after dark, and all sorts of other fun things like dogs, games and cycling.   If I had died at Kohima I would like dogs and children misbehaving round my memorial.
