POWERGEN is planning to shut the lronbridge power station in Shropshire.  It is one of three large (1,000 MW) power stations expected to be mothballed within the next few months.  The others are Drakelow in Staffordshire, and High Marnham in Notts.

PowerGen, which is now owned by Eon of Germany, acquired the three power stations when it bought TXU's retail electricity business for £1.6bn in October. The company has already mothballed  two of its biggest power generating plants - Isle of Grain and Killingholme - because of excess capacity in the market.
