Dear Sirs,

Recent research suggests that trees can make drivers calmer and more alert (Professor Robert Ulrich at Texas A&M University - The Times 4th Sept. 2001. Perhaps the French Agriculture Minister should be made aware of this. And when he says that trees can be replanted in place of trees cut down he obviously misses one of several important points in that the replanted trees will be very much younger and it will take perhaps hundreds of years to truly replace the mature cut down trees.
