Red Hill

On the outskirts of Nottingham going north, just past Arnold, the A60 to Mansfield rises over a low hill (Red Hill) at the top of which the road lies in a cutting.  The eastern wall has been bricked over, but there is fine exposure of the Sneinton formation on the western wall.

The Sneinton formation is the oldest layer of the Mercia mudstones (click here).  These overlie the Sherwood (Nottingham castle) sandstones (click here) to the East of the city.
