RSPCA expels Richard Meade

14 June 2001

The RSPCA has expelled Olympic equestrian Richard Meade for organising a campaign to enrol foxhunting supporters to join.  Mr Meade had run a group called Countryside Animal Welfare Group (CAWG) to encourage hunt supporters to join the RSPCA to persuade it to change its policy on hunting with dogs rather than to further animal welfare.

The private hearing followed a High Court ruling last year that gave the RSPCA discretion to veto applications for membership that the society believed to be part of an "infiltration campaign". In April the society announced it had rejected 500 of 600 applications that had been held in abeyance after the court's ruling. Supporters of blood sports claimed this amounts to a "postcode selection policy" as most of those rejected lived in the country.

Mr Meade's said: "People who take part in country sports know more about animals than urban animal welfare rights people. His barrister said "Richard Meade is a three-time Olympic medallist and the RSPCA should be proud to have him."

RSPCA chairman Malcolm Phipps said: "The RSPCA is a democratic organization but clearly concerted efforts to join the Society for any overriding reason other than animal welfare makes a mockery of this democracy.

Richard Meade won gold medals in three-day eventing at the 1968 Games in Mexico City and the 1972 Olympics in Munich.

iGreen comment

As an independent organisation the RSPCA is entitled to admit who it likes to membership.  However, it is clearly no longer neutral between Town and Country.   It has been captured by the animal rights brigade.  Richard Meade has been campaigning for more country people to join the RSPCA to redress the balance.  iGreens support him in that.  Read his open letter here.
