Sex notes

Quoted in New Scientist 29 July 2006: "...the notion of the promiscuous male shouldn't be taken as an exemplar of prowess, but viewed as a tactic of last resort by males denied the opportunity  to participate in the control of the young they sired."

Joan Roughgarden, Professor of Biological Sciences and Geophysics, Stanford University, California.  Professor Roughgarden is transgendered. She changed her name from Jonathan to Joan in 1998.  She is the author of "Evolution's Rainbow -- Diversity, Gender and Sexuality in Nature and People'' University of California Press 2004.

Kingsley Amis ended his life living in a ménage-a-trois with his first wife Hilly Bardwell and her third husband Lord Kilmarnock.

Henry Kissinger took a pornographic novel with him on his shuttle diplomacy in the Middle East in 1974.  (Woodward and Bernstein. The Final Days. Simon and Shuster 1976, p 168.)  He had to put it aside to read the transcripts of the Watergate tapes.

Harold MacMillan, Prime Minister of Britain 1956-63, had a poignant love life.  His wife, Lady Dorothy, the mother of his three children had a longstanding affair, from 1930 till her death in 1966, with anther Tory MP Bob Boothby - almost certainly the father of her fourth child.   Macmillan and Dorothy ceased all sexual relations but MacMillan still loved her.  He never got involved with any other woman and they remained outwardly the perfect political couple.

Golda Meir, Prime Minister of Israel 1969-1974, had innumerable extra-marital affairs. Click here for quotations by her.
