Sherwood sandstone

Most of the exposures are in Nottingham but the sandstone extends many miles north towards Doncaster.   The overlying soil is notoriously poor; the reason that Sherwood forest was left as forest for so long rather than being cut down for farmland.   Roadside ferns and gorse which thrive on poor soil provide the clue that you are driving over it.
