Stone to Great Haywood

0 miles - New Walton bridge built 28 June 1984.  A520 Stafford road

Old bridge below

Super launching down steps on left bank at Stone canoe club slalom site 50 yards downstream.  Car park

1 mile - A 51 bypass bridge

1.1 miles - bridge

2 miles - metal footbridge.

This carries the path to Burston but as usual landing is difficult

3.5 miles - Sandon bridge. B 5066  Rebuilt 1947.

This picture is of the old bridge

No easy landing but right bank above bridge and exit through field is probably best.  There is a lovely apple tree on the right bank just above bridge.  The Dog and Doublet Inn in Sandon is 500 yards up the road to the left

4.5 miles - Road bridge.  Salt village right

Pitt's column in Sandon Park, erected in 1806, is just visible through trees to the left.  William Pitt the younger was Britain's youngest prime minister, in power on and off between 1783 and his death in 1806.  I've no idea why a memorial was erected to him here.

There is no easy landing place but the left bank just below bridge is probably best.

A small low metal roadside plaque marks the site of trees planted to commemorate the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.  Neither the marriage nor the trees lasted - perhaps the trees died in sympathy.  More likely they were a cheap council gimmic, and never looked after.

5.6 miles - Weston bridge A 518

No easy landing, but the best option is below bridge on the left.  There is access through the field gate to space for loading a couple of cars.

7 miles - farm track bridge

Ingestre right.  A small rapid here.

8.5 miles - road bridge

9.3 miles - road bridge

9.4 miles - canal aqueduct over river.

The Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal joins the Trent and Mersey here.  This picture is of the canal junction,

9.9 miles - River Sow joins right

10 miles - Weir. One foot drop.

10.1 miles - Essex bridge.
