Prestwold Natural Burial ground.  Near Loughborough. Tel  0116 2220247

I popped into this lovely site on a late autumn afternoon, while driving back from Leicester.  It was easy to find from the A60 heading out of Loughborough towards Nottingham.  Just after crossing the river Soar, turn right, and then 0.5 mile later, right again.  Both turnings are signposted to the Natural Burial Ground.   The track is initially potholed tarmac and then unsurfaced.  (iGreens love potholed tarmac. Click here to read why.)

The site is about four acres on a small hill, and still very young.  The main site is already planted with saplings and the owners are gradually replacing the border of conifers with deciduous trees.   Rather too many oaks for a purist perhaps, but that's understandable.  Paths have been made between the graves, and alongside them are wooden posts with commemorative plaques.   Here and there are bench seats.  A number of the graves were recently tended, but no-one else was about.  Many held the remains of rather young people; I noticed a man in his 20's and a woman in her 40's.  Environmentalists both I hope.  They are now anyway.  The Soar, which is canoeable at this point, ran just out of sight in the valley.   I cried a bit, but was happy.  It is a good place.  Jim Thornton. 6 Nov 2002

Tithe Green Burial Ground, Grange Farm, Oxton, Southwell. NG25 0RG. Tel/Fax 01623 882210

This is my local green burial site.  It is situated just off the A614 Nottingham-Doncaster road.  Leave Nottingham on the A64 to Mansfield and at a roundabout fork right on the A614.  After about 4 miles the right turn to the burial ground is well signposted, and the burial ground car park is 1/4 mile down Salterford lane on the left.

Situated in parkland, the burial ground lies within the boundary of the historic Sherwood Forest.  The grassland site adjacent to Darcliff Hill wood is part of the Oxton estate, which has been owned and managed by the Sherbrooke family for over 400 years.

As the plots are filled, the burial area will be allowed to develop into a wild flower meadow by twice yearly mowing.  The graves will become invisible but a plan of their location will be kept.   Biodegradable coffins must be used.  Commemorative tress can be planted on other parts of the estate.

Prices (1992): Single plot of immediate burial £280; Pre-paid plot £250; Grave digging and reinstatement £120; Tree (including stake guard and maintenance) £70   Click here for some pictures.

Sheela Hammond attended a recent burial there and writes, 3 Feb 2006: "The service was exactly what we had asked for.  The 10 acres of Warwickshire farmland was beautiful and peaceful, and starlings provided a background chorus.  Our hazel tree will add to the foresting.  The owner was not only sympathetic and sensitive but had a sense of humour.  While making the arrangements, I became anxious about reserving my own plot.  He replied: 'Don't worry, there's another nine and a half acres'.  I know where I'm going when the time comes!"
