Leeds canoeists and Yorkshire Water were cleaning up the River Aire last week. The canoeists collected rubbish, which had accumulated along the bank, as part of Yorkshire Water's £400 million Rivercare initiative.   Leeds Canoe Club members used their canoes to scour a stretch of river from Morrison’s supermarket near Kirkstall Abbey, to Granary Wharf in the city centre. Yorkshire Water paid £400 to support the effort, which the club plans to spend on new equipment for their junior section.

"By its very nature canoeing is an environmentally friendly leisure pursuit, where people of all ages can develop new life skills whilst looking after the region's rivers," said Ian Needham, chairman of the British Canoe Union for Yorkshire.

"This scheme shows Yorkshire Water is a responsible local company which is willing to invest in the surroundings and the community where it operates."
