Wind power stations ruining countrysideSIR - Patrick Bishop draws attention to "scandalous, catastrophic" plans for an industrial development on "vast amounts of beautiful scenery" in southern France (Daily Telegraph, Aug.17). He refers to yet another wind power station which would produce only puny amounts of electricity. Where is the public outrage in response to similar proposals to desecrate landscapes of national park quality in rural mid-Wales? I refer to the Cefn Croes proposals - 39 turbines, most of them 327 feet high (even bigger than the French monsters) close to the world-famous beauty spots of the Elan Valley, Devil's Bridge and Plynlimon, source of the rivers Wye and Severn. Unlike the French turbines, however, these will be unlit. Military jets on low-flying training exercises use the Cambrian Mountains, and frequently fly as low as l00 feet. An accident waiting to happen? The RAF has expressed concern on safety grounds, but the MoD has overruled the objections (for fear of upsetting the developers?). The National Assembly for Wales and the Department for Trade and Industry still have the opportunity to throw out these lunatic plans, and this they should do without further delay. Dr K. Little. Aberaeron, Ceredigion
SIR- Visitors to mid-Wales should be quite horrified to find out that more than 250 huge wind turbines are already visible from the hallowed viewpoint of Plynlimon Fawr, one of the great mountains of this truly beautiful country. This despoilation of our finest landscapes is all the more distressing because it is unnecessary. There are far less intrusive and efficient ways of generating much needed renewable energy, not to mention the possibilities of energy conservation. The reasons why our treasured upland landscapes are being despoiled is not so that we can save the planet, but because multinational corporations have found an easy way to make a safe subsidised profit.
