Oil has been extracted from this site near Lincoln since the 1950’s.   The total reserves have been estimated at 2.2 million tonnes.   Currently Star Energy (East Midlands) Ltd. owns the site and extracts around 1800 barrels per day from 60 adjacent wells.  Here are the nodding donkeys.

Welton is a major oil collection facility from which oil is transported out by rail.

Now that the field is nearly depleted there are plans to use the source rocks as a gas storage facility.   This would also help to extract the remaining oil.   There have been objections by the local district council and in other areas residents groups have objected to this sort of gas storage.  For example click here.

However there is a considerable need for gas storage in the UK both to deal with seasonal fluctuation in demand and to provide a buffer against supply problems from abroad.  The objections seem to be little more than the usual NIMBY types.
