This suspension bridge over the River Tees at Whorlton was designed by John Green of Newcastle upon Tyne.  The toll house survives at the north end.

The original plan had been for a two-arched bridge, but a flood destroyed the early foundations for this bridge and it was decided to redesign as a single span suspension bridge which was safely completed in July 1831.
