The old shale quarries on the north side of Garth hill (Grid reference SH595393) are one the best trilobite sites in the UK. The rock is from the Tremadoc formation (488 to 479 Million years ago) the oldest subdivision of the Ordovician. Most fossils are distorted by the same geological pressures that made the slates in the first place, but there are plenty of them. The commonest is Angelina Sedwickii. Ignore the active quarries on the south of the hill. They are quarrying igneous rocks and there are no fossils there. The site is just over a mile from the old toll house on the Cob at Porthmadog.
